What is Indoor Air Quality?
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) covers a variety of different gasses, particles and compounds that are almost invisible to the human eye yet circulate through your workplace everyday. The main Indoor Air Quality indicators include carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and Fine Particulate Matter (PM).
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an invisible gas found naturally occurring in the air. It is also produced by human exhalation. Generally carbon dioxide can be found at levels around 400 to 500 PPM (parts-per-million) in the atmosphere. Studies show as carbon dioxide levels rise above 1000 PPM, numerous health issues including headaches, fatigue, tiredness, nausea, dizziness and restlessness. As the levels rise into the 1,000’s, these symptoms become worse including severe headaches, high blood pressure and breathing difficulties. This can end up in hospitalization and debilitating long term health conditions.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) are gasses emitted from either solids or liquids within your workspace. This can include paint, aerosol sprays, cleaners and disinfectants, timber furniture preservatives and also office equipment such as photocopiers, inks, glues and permanent markers. Signs and symptoms of exposure to unhealthy levels of VOC’s include eye, nose and throat irritation, allergic reactions including skin rash, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and nausea.
Fine Particulate Matter (PM) covers a wide variety of tiny particles invisible to the eye. They are measured in microns with 2.5 PM particles being 2.5 microns or less and 10 PM being 10 microns or less. 2.5 PM particles are included in the 10 PM particle count for overall PM measurement. To give context, the width of a 2.5 PM particle would be approximately 30 times smaller than a piece of human hair. These tiny particles or droplets can include dust, smoke, pollen, mold spores and virus and bacteria particles. Exposure to high daily levels of Fine Particulate Matter can adversely affect the health of your workspace as the particles this size are small enough to travel deeply into your lungs and embed themselves throughout your respiratory system. Common effects of high concentrations of PM particles include bronchitis, asthma attacks and studies have linked 2.5 PM exposure to respiratory and cardiovascular disease including increased hospital visits and even death.
What happens if Indoor Air Quality is ignored?
These symptoms and health effects can be severe if Indoor Air Quality is ignored. A recent paper written by SAHMRI in South Australia has linked a significant increase in airborne transmission of viruses such as cold, flu, including COVID19 with high levels of CO2. Utilizing fresh air intake, they were able to show a reduction in CO2 and also in the spread of these viruses in Aged Care situations. For a business, the loss of production, increased sick days, Sick Building Syndrome and medical expenses can cost thousands if a permanent solution is not identified and put in place.
How do we measure Indoor Air Quality?
The first step is to measure the Indoor Air Quality within the space and identify areas such as office cubicles, meeting or lunch rooms that are high in CO2, VOC’s or PM particles. This is done using a highly sensitive IAQ meter that will take a sample of air over a 30 minute period and average the quantities of Carbon Dioxide, Volatile Organic Compounds and Fine Particulate Matter. Once the measurements are taken an assessment can be made. Quite ofter there is existing infrastructure that can be utlised to increase fresh air intake and improve filtration like the existing air conditioning systems and exhaust fans. If not, there may need to be additional fresh air ducts, filters or air scrubbers installed, including the use of Lossnay fresh air systems, to ensure the correct levels of fresh air is achieved. For VOC and PM particles, free standing air purifiers are often a good option in rooms that cannot be easily filtered using the existing air conditioning systems. Such areas include dental or doctor consulting rooms, small offices and lunch rooms.
What happens if you get this right?
Once the Indoor Air Quality is maintained at good levels in a workplace we often see an increase in productivity, reduction in sick days and a drop of sickness including cold, flu and other viruses spreading throughout the workplace. Once problematic areas are identified and preventative measures are in place, there is little maintenance required to maintain a great workplace environment with good Indoor Air Quality.

“These guys fix the problems the others can't even diagnose. True professionals.”
Please pass on our thanks to your technician (Sean) for the first class work he did for us. He was thorough and clear with his advice for the ongoing care of the unit, pleasant and efficient.
We have just had our air conditioner serviced and some parts replaced by Sean and Abbey. Their level of service was outstanding. They were efficient, friendly, professional and cleaned up after themselves! THANKS.
Wow was the only word I could think of to describe the customer service that your company provides.
Over the last 4 years I have unsuccessfully attempted to get a fault corrected in the Temperzone RC Ducted AC unit that is installed at our residence. Today I was pointed in the direction of T & K Airpower (by Temperzone HO in Sydney) as being the service company to approach. From the initial phone call to your Company, I was truly impressed with how my situation was handled. Millie was helpful, knowledgeable and empathetic to the situation and, I feel, went out of her way to ensure that I received a good outcome. She was a delight to deal with and should be commended.
The fact that the service call was able to be scheduled for the same day, despite the location being on the Southern Fleurieu at Victor Harbor, was a bonus. And your service men, Brett and Sam arrived at the scheduled time! They were well presented, professional and were able to resolve the problem within a very short time. Another added bonus was that they carried the spare parts necessary to fix the problem. Within a hour of their arrival, we had a perfectly operating AC system again.
Brett also took the time to answer all our questions and took us through the best operating procedure for the system.

To the team at Airpower.
As a small business owner myself, I think it's important to receive feedback from customers both good & bad in order to see how we are perceived in the market place. From this feedback we can make changes to improve or it can confirm we are on the right track. Unfortunately customers are quick to complain but slow, if at all to give praise and thanks for a job well done. Based on my experience in the past weeks of getting my air conditioner repaired I would like to say how impressed I am with the way your company conducted its self. The girls in admin were always very cheerful & friendly when communicating with me & at all times kept me informed as to how the job was progressing. Marty who carried out the on site work conducted himself in a very professional manner arriving on time, fit & ready for work. He was friendly & informative during his time on site & carried out his work with speed & accuracy. Congratulations all on a job well done. I would be more than happy to recommend your company to anyone seeking assistance in the service & repair of air conditioning units.

We chose T&K Airpower as Oliver was prompt and informative in the selection of our replacement aircon system, and the installation was done professionally and works very well. On time and no hesitation to correct a small follow up issue that arose, but was quickly resolved by Marty.

"I called to say we were absolutely thrilled with Marty's work he fixed our air conditioner and its working perfectly... It's an older unit, a Bradway and we didn't want to spend anymore money he tried a few things as the unit was only working 75% and whatever was done as a part of the service worked a treat we couldn't be happier.... Please thank him and pass on our feed back we really want him to know what a great job he's done and how very happy we are!!!"

I'm writing to thank you and T&K (especially Brett and Sam) for their efforts to restore my air conditioning. The new fan motor is now purring away, and I'm astonished to find that it is almost silent. I appreciate the comprehensive and high-quality service provided by T&K.
